Spectacular Slime!

By Alex

Have you ever played with slime? It’s not just a fun kid’s toy – there is science behind it and so many different types to play with and learn about.

Did you know the Mattel Toy Company first invented slime that you could play with in February 1976? The first slime they made was the color green.

How to Make Slime

Slime is so fun and easy to make. Here are the things you need before you start:

  • White glue
  • Water
  • Shaving cream
  • Food coloring (optional)
  • Baking soda
  • Contact solution

The first step is put in ⅔ a cup of white glue. Once you have done that, add 1-2 cups of shaving cream and 3 tablespoons of water. After you put in the shaving cream, you can add in optional food coloring and mix. Make sure you choose a good color! After the optional food coloring, add 1 ½ teaspoons of baking soda and mix again. Then, add two tablespoons of contact solution. Mix and keep adding contact solution until it is your desired consistency and you’re done!

The Science Behind Slime

But why did your glue turn into slime? Slime is a non-Newtonian fluid, which means it isn’t a liquid or a solid but has portions of both. Polymers make up slime. Polymers are made of long chains of molecules that bind together when the ingredients are mixed together. When the glue molecules and the contact solution molecules mix, they react with each other and stick together to make a messy structure of flexible, long, cross-linked chains. A polymer, a giant molecule, is made up of lots of smaller molecules. That’s the reaction your slime had to the contact solution when you made slime!

Different Types of Slime

Lastly, I want to tell you about the different types of slime. From cloud, to glossy, to bingsu – all slime is fun! For most of these, you add in the ingredients after the slime is formed, but for glossy, you add two additional ingredients into the glue. The two things you need to add are baby oil and lotion. For the lotion, add about five pumps and about a tablespoon of baby oil. Then you’ll have a slime that is easy to stretch and looks glossy/shiny.

For cloud slime (a fluffy, fizzy slime that looks like snow when you drizzle it), you add the extra ingredients in after you’ve made your slime. For cloud slime you’ll need instant snow and water. Put the instant snow in a bowl and add water till it puffs up and looks like snow. Next, dunk your slime into the bowl and try to pick up all the instant snow and you’ll have a cloud slime.

Another type of slime is bingsu or floam. All you need is bingsu beads (cylinder beads) for the bingsu (a slime with cylinder beads) slime and foam beads for the floam. You basically do the same thing with both of the beads, put them in separate bowls and then dunk two different slimes in the bowls and you will have a floam and bingsu slime. You do the same things just with different beads.

There are so many different types of slime to make but these are the most popular slimes to make and play with.

Slime is something that you always don’t know everything about, but you learn new things every day. There’s even a benefit of slime. It was scientifically proven that slime increases your ability to pay attention and helps get rid of stress. Cool, right? Slime truly is awesome!

  1. Woah!! I had no clue that slime had so much science behind it! It’s a non-Newtonian fluid?- I had no clue what that was at first, so thanks for telling me!
